Modern useful silver merits a special place in art history. ln the space of over half a century, an international wave of innovation spawned an unparalleled output featuring some very special objects indeed. If did not take very long for them to be seen as modern classics. The very depths of modernity had been plumbed; little new ground was broken after 1940. According to the literature, a few circumstances were conducive to this breakthrough. Even before the turn of the century people had believed, quite fervently at times, in the progress of art. lt was thought that a break with the post would hasten a renewal of art, as well as contributing to progress and innovation in society. Furthermore, an ample supply of creative talents ensured an originality of formai vision which was frequently supported by good workmanship. In ail the countries represented in the catalogue of this exhibition, individuals and groups fostered the idea that not only contemporary art but also contemporary design - of silver, too - must prevail over traditionalism. Only such a resolute attitude could generate a truly new art.
