Flaptekst

John Claudius Loudon, a Scot, bom 1783, came to England as a young man, made a fortune as a landscape gardener and became a prolific writer and compiler of books and encyclopaedias. He was also a talented architect, and his semi-detached houses were the prototypes of Victorian suburbia. His published works had a potent influence on the design of houses and furniture, and helped to change taste in England between the end of the Georgian age and the beginning of the Victorian period. He was a great traveller, a man far ahead of his time, and he died of overwork and anxiety in 1843.
